How to Find the Perfect Pair of Jeans

So you’re in the market for a new pair of jeans but you just don’t know where to begin? I feel you, because I absolutely hate jean shopping. It’s really not the same as picking up a cute top or buying a new pair of shoes. Jean shopping requires more time, effort and dedication… but the rewards are big. Here are my top tips for buying jeans…

Know your style

There are so many different jean styles out there so knowing which cuts suit you best is always a good start. I’m not saying any particular looks are off limits, but for example, flares and wide leg jeans usually suit taller frames while high waist styles work for those with curves.

Be patient

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and the chances are you won’t find your perfect pair of jeans in one either. Whether it’s online ordering or browsing the rails, be prepared to dedicate some serious time to tracking down your dream denim.

Know your sizes

While you may be used to plucking your size straight off the rails, do you know what your waist and leg measurements are? Getting these correct is a very important step in getting the right fit. Even a lovely pair of jeans can be disappointing if the fit is off.

Check the label

For me, I like my jeans with a little bit of give so I won’t buy a pair that are 100% denim. Instead I’ll look for at least 1% elastane when I’m having a nosey at the label.

Remember the name

These days, high street stores tend to divide their jeans into names – think Topshop’s Joni jeans or the Farleigh style from ASOS. So once you’ve found your perfect pair, my advice would be to remember the range so that you can simply select another pair of the same style in a different shade.

Try before you buy

I don’t know anyone who can just select of pair of jeans in the shop and rely on them fitting well. You have to take your time and try them on before you commit to spending your pennies. In fact, take a few different styles in and try the lot.

TIPS FOR TAKING INSTAGRAM PHOTOS

The waist trick

If you’re unable to make it to the fitting room and you really want to know if your jeans will fit, there is a viral hack going around where you take the waist band (with the jeans done up) and put it around your neck – if the material meets in the middle, they should fit – watch.

Get creative

If your quest for the dream pair of jeans fails, you’ll have to think outside the box. You can easily upcycle denim so consider making your own DIY pair of ripped jeans or dying an existing pair to get more wear out of them.

Where to find good jeans

My favourite places for denim are ASOS, Topshop, Primark, H&M and New Look.
