Aubrey Bay: Luxury Candle Review

In recent years, I’ve become more and more obsessed with candles. Maybe it’s a sign I’m getting old? When the sun goes down, I close the curtains, settle in for the night on the sofa and light a lovely candle. Arthur always takes the mick out of me, for being obsessed about creating a nice ‘ambience’ every evening, but I honestly just love it. Please tell me that I’m not alone?

The perfect candle scent

I was sent the Aubrey Bay lychee peony candle, which is in-fact their best-selling scent and I am not at all surprised that this is the case. As soon as I opened the box I was met with the gorgeous floral scent. It’s so delicate and light that it would be perfect to wear as a perfume too!

Before I lit the candle, I wanted to be sure I got enough pictures of it for this very blog post and my social channels, so for a few days I simply admired my candle on my coffee table. What surprised me most was that even before I burnt the candle, I kept getting a waft of this glorious fresh but floral scent. I really wish smell-o-vision was I thing because I cannot describe how b-e-a-utiful the fragrance actually is.

The look of luxury

I want to talk a little bit about the look of this candle, as for me the visual aesthetics are quite important when it comes to choosing a luxury candle. The fact the candle has two wicks really sets it apart from other candles and adds a level of luxe – double wick candles for the win!

The Aubrey Bay branding is very chic and simple and this is reflected clearly from the label on the front of the candle. It’s monochrome, it’s classic and the luxury style can be compared to that of Jo Malone.

Eco-friendly candle brand

Choosing to support an eco-conscious or ethical brand doesn’t mean you have to compromise on luxury and Aubrey Bay is the perfect example of this. How are they eco, I hear you ask? Firstly, the glass jars are recycled. Then there’s the wax which is soy – a natural alternative to the paraffin wax which is often used for candle making. Soy is made from soy beans and Aubrey Bay are proud that their candles are 100% vegan, not containing any animal fats (like some candles can).

As well as being eco-friendly, soy wax actually saves you money because it burns slower than paraffin wax, meaning the candle will last longer. This Aubrey Bay lychee peony candle has approximately 40 hours of burn time, so as long as I don’t get too carried away, it should last me a while.

Burn baby burn

I’ve learned a few top tips from the pros at Aubrey Bay, so I thought I would share them with you here. The first one is to always trim your wicks to prevent nasty black smoke filling your room. Wicks should be around 6mm long for an optimum burn.

The other thing I’ve learnt is how to prevent tunnelling (when your candle dips in the middle leaving wax high on the sides). What’s important is that when you light your candle for the very first time, you should always wait until your candle burns evenly across to the edges. This will ensure that when it burns the next time, the same surface area will melt again.

The double wick will help the wax melt all the way across to the edge of the glass, but to give it a helping hand you can always wrap some tin foil around the edge to incubate the candle (I saw this tip on Instagram and it works like a charm).
