The Best Things About Being Pregnant That Nobody Tells You

As I count down the days until my baby arrives, I’ve been reminiscing about my pregnancy experience…

Being pregnant is a weird and wonderful time. It’s magical, nerve-wracking, overwhelming and exciting all at the same time. I think we’re surrounded by horror stories about hellish bouts of morning sickness, unsightly swelling and other horrible symptoms, and although these things can sometimes be very accurate, there are also lots of amazing things about expecting.

I’ve been very lucky that it’s been pretty smooth sailing for me, which I’m VERY grateful for, but I just want to reassure all you worrying ladies out there that there are some real up sides to pregnancy and it can be the most amazing experience of your life.

No periods

I repeat. No periods. Hallelujah!

An excuse for not drinking

Sometimes you’re not in the mood for a tipple, but you’re seen as a party pooper, having the really legit excuse of being preggo is ideal in this scenario. I honestly haven’t missed booze as much as I thought I would have.

Free prescriptions

That random foot rash? That little niggle? Now’s the time to get it sorted and pay nothing at all for your prescription. Winning!

You embrace the bump and feel body positive

It’s the best thing, you actually enjoy getting bigger. Well, in the beginning anyway, once you hit third trimester it is like okay, feel free to slow down now, but still It’s a funny old thing considering we are programmed to hate sticky out tummies at all other times.

Everyone is so nice to you

I have the bestest friends and family anyway but seeing how much everyone cares is honestly the cutest thing.

You have an excuse to go shopping

There’s A LOT of stuff you’re going to need to buy. Not want, need. And those tiny little adorable booties fall into that category, right?

You’re never alone

I was waiting at Paddington Station and my train was delayed (joyful) and I was stood up for a while because it was hella busy. As I stared longingly at the boards, waiting for the platform to show, baba started swimming around in there and it felt so reassuring to know I’m not in anything alone at the moment.

A chance to learn something brand new

Don’t get me wrong when I’m mid-baby blues and the little one won’t stop crying, I’m sure I’ll be wailing ‘I just don’t know what to do’ but for now, in my ignorant pregnancy bubble, I’m really enjoying reading up on all things baby and we’ve done an online baby sleep course and an in-person baby first aid training session.

There’s always something to talk about

Gone are the days of awkward chats about the weather, as well as friends and fam, your colleagues, acquaintances and sometimes absolute strangers will want to strike up a convo about your impending arrival.

You have something to look forward to

I’ve been filled with excitement my whole pregnancy for this brand new chapter in our lives. It’s so lovely having something to count down to.

It makes going to the hospital a positive experience

While I can’t speak for the birth (eek!) I have looked forward to my hospital visits as a chance to see baba and check on everything. For those who don’t really like hospitals, it just might change your perception.

A new perspective on life

I know pregnancy can be an anxious time for some, but for me it’s actually helped mellow out my stress levels. When I’ve had disasters during my pregnancy (train troubles, a flat battery in the car and two magpies flying down our chimney) I haven’t had the same dramatic reaction I normally would have had. The bottom line is, as long as baby is happy and healthy, I feel less stressed about everything else.

A closer bond with your partner

I’ve never felt as in love with Arthur as I do right now. The way he’s supported me, cared for me and really stepped up while I’ve been pregnant has been so sweet. I know it’s the woman going through the bodily changes, but your partner can still be so involved with the process every step of the way. We’ve loved looking at the Pregnancy + app together each week to track the progress.

Even more appreciation for your mum

The sacrifices you make from day one when you’re pregnant make you appreciate your mum even more! I’ve also found myself having so many more open conversations with my own mama – talking about my pregnancy experience as well as her own.

If you’re reading this and you’re pregnant yourself, I send you the biggest congratulations and hope that you’re enjoying it just as much as I have. But remember, there will be downsides too and if you’re having a knackered, weeping, sicky kinda day, it will pass and I’m sending you all the love.
