DIY Car Ramps: The £15 Hack Every Boy Mum Will Thank Me For

DIY car ramps made from guttering

Hello. Remember me? The last time I posted was way back in January, but at least I’ve managed to get another in before the year is out (woo). I’ve been busy being a working mum, not leaving much time for anything else, but I’m here to share a DIY toy hack you’re going to want to know about.

Disclaimer – the title says this is for boy mums, but I’ll be honest, that was just for impact, this project is actually going to be a hit with your kids no matter the gender, but I just know how OBSESSED my son is with cars. If you’ve got a car-mad kid, this upgrade will keep them entertained for hours. Trust me.

I first got this idea at the Bristol Harbour Festival, when the kids area had a super-simple but really effective series of guttering pipes for the children to put balls down and collect in a bucket at the end. So, I made my son his own ramps – complete with roads!

B&Q / Amazon DIY car ramps

The first stop was B&Q, one of my favourite haunts. Out to the builder’s yard with the pram to pick up some guttering. One length came in at around £8. I did get a few stares as I carried them on my shoulder to the till – but I do love being a mum that does it all.

As soon as I got them back, my son couldn’t wait to race his cherished cars down them but I knew I could make them even better. Good old Amazon came through with two reels of road tape and within seconds they were transformed. Now, “Can I have my ramps out mummy?” is a daily occurrence.

My original plan was to use them outside, but given the fact the days are cold and wet now, they do spend most of the time taking up my living room, but I pop them under the stairs each night. Yes, they are long, but anything for our kids’ happiness, right? However, if you don’t fancy your lounge being overrun, it’s something you could easily make come summertime and store in your garage/shed for sunny days in the garden.
